RESTAURANTS • First Word

Midas touch

The Skinny: Opened in January on Lincoln Road, Oro is Chef Victor Muñoz's globally-inspired golden palace — part restaurant, part performance venue.

The Vibe: A golden escalator whisks you up from street level into what can only be described as Miami's most committed theme restaurant. Nearly every surface gleams gold: walls with 24-karat leaf, gilded arches, performers with golden chandeliers balanced on their heads. Musical acts circle the dining room every hour, while the retractable roof opens for South Beach rooftop views. It's maximalist theater that draws plenty of tourists; you might as well embrace the spectacle.

The Food: Also over the top. Kaluga caviar with fermented banana peel butter, plantain waffle, and horseradish crème made for one of the more creative caviar preparations I’ve had. The birria gyoza offers a fusion twist with braised wagyu cheek, cilantro, and bone marrow consommé. Tom kha crudo delivers with hamachi and wasabi topped with coconut broth and finger lime. The Alaskan halibut arrives with a carrot curry that begs to be lapped up, while Okinawa gnocchi offers perfect al dente texture with sweet potato and sage brown butter.

The Drink: Cocktails read theatrical with names like Shangri-La, featuring Macallan 12 with sherry cask and foie gras, while the Vanilla Sky delivers boozy dreamsicle vibes. The classics section executes proper versions of standards.

The Verdict: Oro swings big with genuine culinary ambition wrapped in Miami's most gilded package. It’s worth experiencing for the spectacle alone, with food that (mostly) lives up to the setting. –Olee Fowler

WORK • Thursday Routine

Wine o’clock

ALLEGRA ANGELO • partner • Vinya
Neighborhood you work & live in: Key Biscayne

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I typically work out of our Key Biscayne store, but on Thursdays, I work out of the Vinya warehouse in Allapattah. Our Vinya Wine & Market and Vinya Table have locations in Key Biscayne and Coral Gables. I look forward to Thursdays because I get serious alone time with my computer and mind. I write my daily to-do list, which usually includes: fulfilling special last-minute client delivery requests, adjusting real-time inventory, designing graphics and writing copy for our special events. One of my favorite times of the week is 5-7p on Thursdays. I usually pop a bottle from the warehouse, sit with a glass, type away on my computer, and enjoy the wonderful silence.

What’s on your agenda today?
Today, I’m excited about writing an online offer for Château Palmer’s rare white wine made from Muscadelle, Sauvignon Gris, and Lauzet. Only 250 bottles come to the U.S. We have a kosher wine collection online, and I’m scrambling to send my purchase orders before the 3p cutoff, so our nationwide customers can get their wine before the Shabbat holiday. The wine business is forever dynamic, a true 24/7 industry.

Any bar or restaurant plans today, tonight, or this weekend?
I’m kind of embarrassed to say, but I finally went to Pinch Kitchen for the first time and loved it. They have a killer happy hour with decent wine. They’re celebrating their 10th anniversary this year, which is a massive accomplishment.

How about a little leisure or culture?
I love ice skating at the IcePlex in Fort Lauderdale. I’m terrible at ice skating, but it gives me this rush of joy. It’s especially rewarding in the summer, when it’s so darn hot. I’m a sports fan girl, more than an athlete, and my car radio is always tuned into 940 AM. Dan Patrick and the Danettes are my idols. My team is the NY Giants, but I love going to watch The Heat, Panthers, or Dolphins play.

Any weekend getaways?
My boyfriend and I are Keys people, which doesn’t match our fast-walking, fast-talking metro-life personalities. We try to go every three months. The worst part? Leaving is so hard. In the car, I feel like I’m in sixth grade, hating to go back to school after the best summer of my life. We have a giant blue Igloo cooler that we pack with snacks, Chablis, mezcal, and Filthy Margarita Mix.

We wake up at 5a and head out at 6a, to drive down to Marathon with a coffee break at Midway Café and a pit stop at Robbies to feed the tarpon. I love running the old seven-mile bridge two miles to Pigeon Key and taking a moment to stare into the never-ending sea, looking at all the sharks and stingrays just passing by below. The quiet milky sands of Bahia Honda, the tuna poke and skinny fries at Burdine’s, and those melty blood-orange sunsets — you can’t beat it. I dream of having my own place in Marathon.

What was your last great vacation?
My last non-work-related vacation was a family trip to Lake Como. I also went to Friuli, Italy to make my own rosé, which ended up turning into a sparkling fruit-flavored brand. That was a great moment for me, being part of the creative and branding process. It’s currently sold in Italy and Switzerland, and will launch in Florida this summer.

Ranch dressing

As spring and summer approach, seemingly everyone will jet off to classic vacation destinations across Europe and beyond. But for me, nothing could be more sublime than an escape to the San Ysidro Ranch. Recently, I was fortunate enough to experience three nights of bliss there during the holiday season. Now, I daydream about long summer nights on the grounds.

It’s easy to settle in at The Ranch. All rooms are private bungalows, dotted around the lush property, each featuring a stone fireplace, clawfoot tub, outdoor shower, hot tub, and spacious patio covered in bougainvillea. But what really got me were the wallpapers, a woven floral design with delicate fringed flowers in the main living area, and an exquisite, hand-painted floral design in the bathroom.

To alleviate sticker shock when booking a stay, it helps to know that the room rate includes three meals a day at any of the hotel’s restaurants or through in-room dining. We loved easing into the day by having breakfast delivered to our patio each morning. The menus are well done, but not extensive, so if you plan to take advantage of the all-inclusive dining, three nights feels like a sweet spot. (Yes, the seafood tower and the caviar service are included.) For a special dinner, reserve the Old Adobe private room, the resort’s oldest property structure, dating back to 1825.

The landscaping and grounds are the hotel’s best feature, and nothing like I’ve ever experienced before. Hummingbirds are everywhere, constantly darting between rosemary lawns, big beautiful trees, famous rose garden set against the mountain vista, and the gorgeous herb garden frequented by the chefs. The pool has views of the Pacific Ocean and also features an impressive mini golf course, bocce court, and a lovely open-air restaurant, perfect for a late leisurely lunch.

The salon and spa are charming but intimate, so book treatments in advance (and note that the spa doesn’t have a sauna or private relaxation lounges to wait before or after your service).

To make an incredible situation even better, the hotel is extremely dog-friendly. They offer a “Pampered Pets Program,” which will ensure that your cottage has the proper pet bedding, bowls, and a peanut-butter-adorned welcome treat (to say nothing of the special in-room dining menu specifically designed for pets). The Ranch is also connected to more than 17 miles of dog-friendly hiking trails up the San Ysidro Canyon, which our pampered pup, Scout, made the most of every day. –Sarah Jackson
